would it be better to get a '03 400 and buy some aftermarket parts or would i get better bang for my buck to get a 450r. and if i got the 400 is there any way i could even get it to compare to a 450 without spending an arm and a leg

Have you ridden either? I've been on a 400 for over a two race seasons now and so far the 450Rs that Ive ridden I have NOT been comfortable on. Yes they have much more power, but the jumping and handling leaves something to be desired. Granted my 400 has elkas all the way around, and the 450s I rode had stock shocks. Im still waiting to ride a 450R with a ZPS shock setup all the way around on it.
