450r gearing for Harescrambles

I just picked up my new 450 about a week ago, and it seems geared a little high for XC. What do you guys run gearing wise for XC? Thanks for any responses.

Drop to a 13 tooth in the front. It makes a huge difference.

i run the stock gearing. 14-38. with no mods it was way too tall. but now i have a hot cam stage 2, sparks pipe, and an fcr carb. it can pull the stock gears now. i can do 2nd gear starts.

Ive got an hmf full system, and i run 13-37 gearing. 13 on the front seemed too low and the stock gearing was too high.

I am #1 in the ATVCCS Pro Class in Texas, and I raced in the Pro Class at the Gilmer GNCC, and I have done alot of gearing tests. I run 13- 37, or you can run 14- 39 these are really close to each other as far as the ratio goes. This setup works really well. Its ratio is just between 13- 38 and 14- 38. Another great reason for running 13- 38 is that with the stock swing- arm your chain adjustment is nearly all the way back giving you a longer swing-arm nearly 1 inch longer.

You may want to try a Trail Tech flywheel, I believe they are 8 or 9 oz. heavier than stock. This will make it alot less likely to stall and should make it pull a little harder off the bottom. This is going to be my next upgrade, I've heard nothing but good things about it. You may also want to jump to a 39 on the rear and go with a 13 on the front. This is about as steep as you can go in gearing, and you shouldn't notice much top speed loss.

a 13 39 is a 3.00 final ratio and so is a 14 42

stock gearing 14 38 is a 2.71 final ratio

a 13 38 is a 2.92 final ratio

14 39 is a 2.79

i think but i may be wrong that when you hit the open parts if a track you will get stomppppped by using that 3.00 ratio

but you will be able to come out of tight coners and trees in 2nd or thrid gear

good luck figuring out all this advice

I think it's a fair trade off, most of our locals don't have very long open sections, and with the HRC kit and a few other mods it should work fine, pulling nicely out of corners and still not losing any top speed. Maybe in a GNCC it might matter. Look at the jump in ratio just dropping to the 13 front, the loss from adding the 39 should be much less noticable.

13-39 is the only way to go if you are running a stock or mildly modded motor.....I run this set-up on my practice bikes which range from stock motors, with just pipes, to motors with High compression pistons and cams.

Now on the race bikes....490's we run the stock gearing and it pulls it no problem.
