The city of Buchanan, Michigan welcomed the 752 racers that decided to make the trip for round seven of the 2005 ATVA ITP Moose Grand National Championship Motocross Series. The Red Bud National is sponsored by Outerwear’s.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The biggest news regarding this event is John Natalie hot off of a controversial round six of the series, was suspended by the AMA citing unsportsmanlike conduct at the last round. Per the rulebook he is appealing that suspension and is allowed to race pending the decision by the appeal board. If he looses the appeal, everything from the weekend could be stricken from record. An appeal can take up to 30 days to happen and we will bring you the information as it comes together. In the mean time lets get going with round seven of the ATV MX Nationals.

Take a trip down Red Bud Trail and you can't miss the huge vertical signs that welcomes you into the gates of Red Bud.

Saturday morning was a bad day for some, and a good day for others. Jorge Cuartas of the FMF Media Allstars race team, racer in Open B and Veteran 30+ and the creator to the beautiful event programs, was taken to the hospital after breaking his “good” right leg (Jorge requires the use of a prosthetic from his knee down on his left leg). He went into surgery to repair the damage but won’t be able to bear weight for quite a while. Get better soon Jorge! You’ll be missed until you’re back!

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The good day however belonged to little Kyle Bartolini as he finally got his very first ATV for doing the unthinkable; learning to walk again.

The crowd that showed up to watch this presentation unfold was overwhelming. I was glad to be taking pictures to remain busy and keep from shedding some happy tears. Others watching didn’t have such luck. I think it took Kyle a little bit to really grasp what was happening but once he got on his new Dinli, it wasn’t until bedtime that he came off of it. I’m sure if his parents would have let him, Kyle would have slept on it.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Kyle, who turns five on the 27th of May, shows what to do when you come to a turn on the track! You could find Kyle all over the place, at the starting gate, in the Pro pits, high-fiving people who stopped to talk to him. You wouldn’t think just last year, he couldn’t even move his legs as he was and still is considered a quadriplegic.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Unfortunately, this was one sign and rule that called it “a day” (and weekend) for Travis Spader. Opening an extra spot for another Pro rider to enter the mains for Sunday.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Saturday night, Outerwears hosted a pizza party for everyone followed up with a great band. That thought was great, had a lot of people been a little more considerate and not walked away with mounds of pizza leaving many to miss out (including me).

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

9am Sunday Morning – same song

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Riders draw while ATV Racin’ Extras, David Screws holds the can.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Joe Byrd strikes gold!

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Ah, the things boys will do for their moms. Jason Dunkelberger dressed in his race version of Sunday best, walks his mom’s dog, Taffy.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Immediately after practice, the Pros form a line for their tech session. First the spreader bar (which many failed) and then sound testing. Referee Bob “Smitty” Smith announced to expect the spreader bar when they arrive for the first moto.

One-by-one they take the test. The spectator turn-out was quite large. Several would fail the first test and be forced to come back for a second.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The way it works is to set the meter a distance of 20 inches from the end of the exhaust which a little string cut to the right measurements making it easy to set up.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Then a simple device is placed to feel the vibrations of the bike and show you when you’ve reached the required RPMs of the bike brand and a reading is taken from the meter.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

It’s as simple as that which is the standard.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Lost Creek is use to the drill and passes with a 101.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

A quick run-down of the levels. As always, Tim Farr reads the lowest decibels at 98. White Brothers does good for Tim, with two wins under his belt with a more than legal exhaust.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The fans beginning lining the fence.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Because the pros are starting the line dance.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Smitty wasn’t kidding when he said he’d have the spreader bar at the line. Keith Little’s mechanic rides it through and fails, sucking up the bar. The weight difference between him and Keith was enough to make that much of a difference and when Keith rode it through he was okay. Whew!

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Red Bud is one of the few tracks across the country that use transponders and decided to use them in the Pro class. A simple device the size of a quarter is inserted into a little elastic band for the riders to wear, just like you see. Seeing who had the fastest lap times made things a little more interesting.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Back at the nationals for a race, simply because he loves this track, Dana Creech took the three day trip to get there from California. Keith Little gives gives him the good luck wrist bump thing (no idea what the proper term is for that one is)

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto1Holeshot.jpg

Fans witness an intense, clean start with Doug Gust and John Natalie inches from each other, Gust earns that holeshot. His first of the season.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

After the first corner, the two Yoshimura/Suzuki’s make to the downhill ski jump first.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto1InfieldLap1.jpg

It would take a lap for John Natalie to get around Jeremiah Jones and settle in behind Doug Gust.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto1NatalieJones.jpg

Kory Ellis falls in line in fourth behind Jones and Natalie.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Jason Dunkelberger (out of picture) holds off the charging Keith Little (12), Pat Brown (199) and Dustin Wimmer (191).

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Getting a bum deal with 20th gate pick , Tim Farr (4) gets a bad start and try to do what he can to move up, here moving up over Gilbert Attix (309).

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Dana Creech had an amazing ride in the Pro Qualifier the day before, but manages a back of the pack start, ahead of Matt White (32) and Donald Lysinger (411).

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Tavis Cain came down in dead last but puts together a great ride moving in over riders on up to 14th for the moto.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Jason Dunkelberger shows that he can hang, as he works to move towards Kory Ellis who is currently in fourth.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Three Honda’s are about mid-pack as Joe Haavisto (75) holds off but for a lap or two the number 7 of Joe Byrd and 4 of Tim Farr.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto1WimmerWreck.jpg

Another Honda mounted rider, Dustin Wimmer had brake rotor issues when they decided to chomp on a rock. Over five minutes down, he would eventually get back into it but finish with a disappointing 19th for the moto.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

About the half way point, Dana Creech holds a spot over Steve Runkel (911), Matt White (32) and Justin Bres (99).

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Justin Bres would fall in the finish order with 17th behind Steve Runkel who would take 15th and Matt White who took 16th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Pat Brown (199) was having a hay day trying to find ways around Keith Little and eventually Jason Dunkelberger.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Donald Lysinger had a rough moto finishing in 18th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Harold Goodman would make his way around Joe Haavisto to land in 10th while Haavisto would take 11th and Gilbert Attix take 12th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Tim Farr donned new colored gear, while as he took 9th for the moto behind Joe Byrd who took 8th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Dana Creech ended up having bike issues causing him to fall back and eventually just move out of the way for everyone to get around, just so he could get a finishing position for the moto which ended up being 20th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Donald Lamborn was on fire in Saturdays qualifier and carried it over well by taking 13th for the moto.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The roost in front of Jason Dunkelberger (19) was that of Pat Brown (199) who finally found a way around Dunk who successfully blocked his every move. Brown earned 5th while 6th and 7th went to Dunk and Keith Little respectively.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto1JonesEllis.jpg

A exciting battle up front went on for not only the lead but 3rd and 4th. If there is drafting in ATV MX Kory Ellis would be teaching a class as he keeps mere inches between him and Jeremiah Jones but would never make it around him.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Doug Gust earned his first moto win of the season, but not without John Natalie breathing down his neck, ending the moto in second.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

In all the Nationals I have been to (which really isn’t that many) this event had by far the most fans I have ever seen. As soon as the first Pro moto was over, they high-tailed it to the Pro pits. I felt bad for the Pro’s who just came off the track and hadn’t even caught their breath before fans started lining up for autographs.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

But the Pros were gracious about it, including Joe Byrd as kids were everywhere hoping to snag an autograph.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Honda fans, adorned in Honda gear hope for an appearance on ATV Sport TV later this year when it airs.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The lines for autographs were amazing. The Pro’s had to of been getting a second dose of arm pump just from signing posters.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Suzuki’s line was by far the longest as they did their best to sign what they could. I didn’t stick around, but it was 2 o’clock when I was there and the line still looked like it wouldn’t be done for another half hour, definitely cutting into getting ready for the second moto time for Doug and Jeremiah.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The Honda star, Tim Farr comes out to the very long line that awaited him.

Wow! The last time I was at Red Bud two years ago, the fan base was nothing like this. How times have changed even in just two years.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

I'll be back with Pro Moto 2 shortly!

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Sorry about that delay.

The second moto started with a Honda sandwich with Suzuki as the bread.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2Holeshot.jpg

This is cropped oddly because the angle I was at, would’ve missed out on some riders coming down the jump for the start, so I turned my camera to get all of them until the leader when out of the frame. This time…again…was Doug Gust who took the holeshot.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Getting tangled up on the start were these three. Including Justin Bres who started but got hurt. Dana Creech never made it to the start with bike problems unable to get together in time for the second moto.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Almost immediately Jeremiah Jones highsides as many riders get by including Steve Runkel.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2InfieldLap1.jpg

Around the wide, berm Gust leads over Natalie as Keith Little is tailed by Kory Ellis.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Dustin Wimmer pulls up the rear behind Tavis Cain (6) who got a decent start as did Pat Brown (199) and Joe Byrd (7).

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2NatalieGustBattle1.jpg

Fans in the stands watch as John Natalie gets by Doug Gust in the second lap but does little to loose him as Gust remains knocking the entire moto.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Ellis settles in third holding off Keith Little who now has Tim Farr in fifth as he moved in over Joe Byrd.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Pat Brown chases down Byrd as Tavis Cain and Dustin Wimmer work to move up. Neither would catch Pat and ride in this order for the rest of the moto.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Suffering a bad start, Jason Dunkelberger does a great job working through the pack to the front with Joe Haavisto tagging along for much of the ride.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

His first race back for the year, Steve Runkel puts together another good moto moving up one position over the first to 14th for a 15th Overall.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Donald Lamborn seemingly is improving every round. He drops two positions over the first moto with a 15th for the second but takes home his highest overall of the year with a 13th. Watch out for this one!

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Red Bud wasn’t too kind to Matt White this time out and he takes the second moto with 17th and overalls the day with an 18th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Fans were quite comical. These were the stands to be in to view both sides of the track, not missing any part of the action. The leaders were obviously on the other side.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2NatalieGustBattle2.jpghttp://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2NatalieGustbattle3.jpghttp://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2FinalLap.jpg

As Natalie fights to maintain his leader position over Gust, which wasn’t by much, but would remain successful.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2EllisOff.jpg

Finally putting together a good two motos, Kory Ellis was hot never loosing his third place position in the moto, overall and finally a podium.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

http://www.atvriders.com/images/atvracing/gncmx/2005/07RedBud/Moto2FarrLittleBattle.jpg

Another great battle aside from the leaders was those going for fourth. Tim Farr got around Keith Little while Joe Byrd still hung tight as Pat Brown moves in closer to the group.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Donald Lysinger put together another great ride better immensely over the first moto. He is about to loose two positions though…

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

…as Dunk and Jeremiah Jones rocket past him in the whoops section.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Coming off of his outstanding performance in round six, Gilbert Attix drops a few positions from the first moto to 16th to overall the day with another 14th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Harold Goodman went 10-13 for an overall 11th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Although he improved some positions over the first moto, he still finished with an overall of 17th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Jeremiah Jones definitely had a rough moto, with a high side and then goggle issues. He ended the moto with an 11th dropping his overall to an 8th. He remains in fourth place for points with 120. A distance 21 points behind third.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Jason Dunkelberger came from close to last up to 10th for the moto. Giving him a 9th overall. He still sits outside the top ten by just two points.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Collecting ten spots over his first moto finish, Dustin Wimmer earned 9th for an overall 12th. He sits in 9th place for points with 78.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Patrick Brown successfully held off Tavis Cain to finish 7th and 8th respectively. Brown earned his highest overall of the season with 5th bringing him into 10th place for points while Cain earned his second 10th place overall and falls outside the top 10 into 12th.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Keith Little had to work for his 5th for the moto as Joe Byrd tried his every move to get around but had to settle for 6th. Little earned the 4th overall and 5th in points while Joe Byrd went home with 7th overall and sits nicely in 8th for points.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Tim Farr took fourth for the moto and sixth overall due to his ninth for the first moto. He drops his lead to second by only nine points.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Not seen since round three was the Pro podium graced by three different OEM manufacturers. Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

Probably the largest group of fan turnout for a Pro podium in a while. Red Bud obviously has a very strong fan base.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

The 2005 ATV MX Red Bud National by Outerwears – Pro Podium

nice job natalie

Posted by: mike bartolini

nice pic

Posted by: protraxrptr17

This was the best photo coverage so far. Great job of getting action from all over the track.

Posted by: Cron

Awesome coverage. Best yet. It is awesome to see the behind the scenes stuff that most of us do not see who are not there the whole weekend.

Glad to see such a great turnout. I did not realize that many people were there. That is a great sign for the sport. I bet the Pros enjoyed seeing all the fans watching them race.

Hopefully the ATVA will see Jones bump on Ellis in the last lap of Moto 1 and decide not to be so harsh on Natalie. I think the Natalie Suzuki drama has made this one of the most exciting seasons. Jones bump on Ellis to stop him from getting third was just like Natalies bump on Jones. ATVA LET IT STAND AND MOVE ON!

Great coverage!

Posted by: TC426EX

Great Coverage.... I hoped Farr would have finished stronger, but Im sure he'll get 'em next round!

Harlen has the small video clips from Red Bud I'm sure he will get them up ASAP!

We ran into a little contractual problem with ATV SPORT TV with the full video clips to post but resolved the problem yesterday so the full clips should be up tomorrow some time! (We have to do a little PR with SPORT TV and the videos) (Fair trade I guess since we have the absolute right to broadcast the footage over the net now)(Ithink we are the only ones that own that right)!

The Photos (2500 pics) from Red Bud went up this morning!

Be sure to check them out !
(We switched cameras to a 20D and man are the photos SWEET!

See Ya in the Amateur Reports tomorrow!

I brought back one heck of a head cold with me so we are a little slower this week!

i understand how the front could be effected by the rider weight when considering the width but were the rear tires that low on pressure that a lighter rider made that much of a difference.

the local tracks around here are starting to have a spreader bar at the gate and it is common for the front to catch the bar unless you lean way back and sometimes spraying the tires with wd-40 helps just enough to make that bar slip off.

Posted by: culookn

great coverage like always, keep up the good work.

Posted by: GNC_Reporter

John Natalie Jr. will keep all points earned from this round as the appeal board ruled in his favor.

Now lets get back to some great action with five rounds to go! It's still racing and anything can happen. I think it's about to get really good!

Are you ready for it?
