(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

is the crf carb worth buying for the power gain. Is it the best carb avaliblefor the 450R. need some help guys

Posted by: tucson450r

I am trying to find out what the difference is between the FCR and the stock carb is. If I find out I will let you know.

Posted by: R3Concepts

There is no power gain, its all throttle response, and yes its worth the 350 from SH for the 03 CRF carb and the 65 for the Noss or Baldwin adapter..Good times. And the FCR is a flat slide, and the stock 42 mm isnt.

Posted by: rodenberg35

so the 03 is the one I need then? or does it even metter what year

Posted by: R3Concepts

03s the cheapest.

Posted by: brif

You will also need approx. 8" of 5/16 fuel line and 1 hose clamp for the piece of hose.

and a adapter from jh racing

What do you do for the throttle cable?

Posted by: brif

Use the stock throttle cable and a mixture of the stock and crf carb hotstart components..........

Posted by: CdaleXtreme

The stock hot start cable will work with the FCR carb, but it wont allow for the 90 degree bend in the cable that the FCR comes with. Which is needed to properly route your cable. I personally exprienced some binding ussiues until I switched to the 03 CRF hot start cable which works perfectly.

Posted by: brif

I too was worried about the stock hotstart cable. Most seem to use it and not have any problems( I haven't) although if the 03 hotstart cable works with the stock hotstart button, I would consider the switch also.

i never noticed any gains from the carb switch until i done it with a built motor and had a 2 hp gain on the dyno

Could someone please explain the difference between the 03 and 04 CRF carb? since the 04 is a little bit pricier ($406 from service honda), wouldnt it be a better overall carb?

Sorry to steal your thread man

Posted by: R3Concepts

I think they are all the same. We've always used the 03 ones.

The 04 has a different fuel bowl, buffer plate, and uses different style needles then the 02 & 03. I went with the 04 (newer technology)

I am glad everyone else has the same questions I do and questions I didnt think of. so any questions or info will help

I talked to Mark Baldwin extensively about this last weekend at the Nationals. His carb is expensive, however it is NOT an off of the shelf carb. It has tons of internal modifacations, and it DOES make more power. The exact amount of increase depends on the motor combination.

here's an option for 450R owners

Thats a good find on a hell of a carb!
Thanks Chuck!

Ive seen that on ebay also, makes me wonder if its a 41mm or just a 40mm CRF carb. I find it hard to believe its a 41mm at that price since it includes the lever and all. Maybe not who knows.

if you do get a fcr carb it wouldnt be that bad of an idea to put a boyesen accelerator pump on it to get rid of the bogging, i have heard good things about them.

The FCR shouldn't bog if properly setup, unless you've got an odd setup.

Im using the 04 crf 450 carb on my 450r and I love it. Much better throttle response and top end. It seems to make it through the rpms alot quicker. Helped in the sand as well. use a white brothers ignition, raises revlimiter 1000 rpms. Im not sure about using the stock hot start. I recommend geting a crf 450 hot start stock or aftermarket. Tim Farr (team honda) used the stock CRF 450 hotstart last year, not sure what he is using this year. Im using an ASV adjustable cluch and hot start perch. Works sweet. The works connection perch is sweet too. Also I would go with the 04 carb as it meters fuel better and has slightly better flow. Don't ya love honda's?

I've heard guys mention starting issues with the boyesen pump cover on the 450R. They say it's fine with the FCR, but when they install the new pump cover it's harder to start. Has anybody seen this?

There probobly just flooding it. With the boysen or r&d plates it forces more fuel in when they pump the gas..
