my suzuki burnt a piston up yesterday

and we took it apart to check it out and after it all we had the crackshaft out of it and noticed that the guy before us had a hot rods wiseco connecting rod, well we noticed it didnt have any thrustwashers on the top of it, is it supposed to have some? it seemed to be fine without them. and the reason it burnt a piston we suspect is that it went lean somehow by sucking air in somewhere, and were pretty sure it wasnt coming in through the carberator...anyone have an idea about the thrust washers????
