I am rebuilding my 400 and am wondering what the best engine oil to use is?I tried a search but didn't come up with anything useful.Let me know what everyone is using.

If its a fresh rebuild run non-synthetic oil for break in. I used just regular honda GN4. Synthetic will cause too much slip and wont let it break in properly. The longer you run the non synthetic the better. Then later down the road switch over to synthetic. Here you can read more about break in procedures at www.mototuneusa.com

i run Silkolene 10w-40 in my 400. it goes in blue and after a few weeks of hard riding is just about as blue as it went in. No complaints thus far but i havent been running it for a really long time yet.

10w40 royal purple motorcycle oil. in winter and 20w50 cycle oil in summer. royal purple is some great oil.

Break it in with a good quality non-synthetic and then put in Amsoil (full synthetic) 0w-40 4-Stroke oil. I started using it last year and the oil still looks clean after about 500 miles of trail riding. Good stuff for sure, doesn't break down like the Honda (non-synthetic) crap does. I also use Amsoil products in my car, truck and snowmobile. It's cheaper than Honda's synthetic's also!

A good oil to use for break in is th e honda oil, or the Delo 15w40. that is what I broke my racecar engine in with, whoops I spelled racecar backwards

GN4

I just stick with the Honda GN-4. It may make an oil change cost a couple of bucks more, but you KNOW it's OK instead of wondering, and anyways I like to stick with Honda and Honda recommended parts.

i used to use the gn4 10w40 from honda. not even a year later and i was burnn oil. im gonna try some 20w50 to see if that stops it from smoking. if it dosent and continues to use oil or get worse i guess ill be rebuilding the motor.
