Stock linkage question

I just got a used linkage for my 250r. I noticed that the U shaped part was steel vs. the other part which is aluminum. The 2 things that I noticed was that the U part was bare metal, or atleast looked like it, and it wasn't rusting. I would like to polish it but I just want to make shure it is or isn't steel. I kinda don't see the point in making one part of the linkage steel, and the other aluminum.

I am pretty sure it is steel. But a way to tell, is to put a magnet up to it, it will not attrack to aluminum.
