my bike's rear end going to the side in air

There is a couple jumps I have been hitting that when I hit it, my rear end goes off to the side and I can't recover it. It ends up w/ a hard landing and almost throwing me off. I am htting it dead on and smooth, can't figure it out. ANyone have this problem on their 400ex. Also, I am somewhat new to jumping 4 wheelers, used to motocross 2 wheelers. But I can still jump well otherwise.
thanks

Dumb question but does your tires have the same air pressure?

there would be an imperfection in the lip of the jump that is throwing you. you cant always expect the jumps to be smooth u have to adjust in the air if u want to land nice. just keep jumpin it and adjust accordingly. jumpin a quad is alot different then jumpin a bike.

yeah, im starting to see that. I figured this much the only reason I asked is because I was riding w/ a friend and we seemed to be hitting the jump on the same lines. Anyway, just thought I would ask.....thanks for the help!!

Your weight is being shifted to one side. What your doing is leaning to one side or pulling one side while your in the air or just as you hit the lip. Try and keep your weight center and balanced, just keep hittin it and your adjust yourself till you find the perfect position. Just takes time.

cool, makes sense. Thanks for the help!

r u jumpen against the wind?

i did down n the dunes and it put me sidways enough to bust the beed on 2 tires o and i tore a rotator cuff

Posted by: platinum350

damn that sux, the rotater cuff is no fun to mess up! No, I think it's just me and/ or the face of the jump.

if you lean to one side the bike is gonna tilt not just kick the rear end one way. it would be the lip of the jump and maybe your wheels arent straight when u leave.

There was about six of us in a fair race this year that had this same problem. I had hit this 45 footer about 11 times with no problem. When I went to lap this kid he had boxed to the outside and I hit it where the other guys had been hitting it and when I landed it I was almost completely sidways. It bucked hard and tossed me over the bars. Caught myself and finish the race though! But yeah after going back and looking at it the jump had developed a small lip where all the quads and bikes had been hitting it through the night.

one other thing I didn't see mentioned.....that can happen if you are accelerating too much over the jump.

You also have a battery on one side that throws off the balance a little. Thats why aluminum air boxes relocate it to inside the frame.

well to add to this. We were re-assembeling my quad last night and found that I either have a bad shock or a bad a-arm. One side sits about 1/4" to an 1/2" lower than the other, while on the stand.
We hope that will go away when we let it down but somehow I do not think it will.

i did the same exact thing, except i bent my axle and right side a arms. and fracture3d my hip and wrist

Its one of the two , plain and simple:
1.lower tire pressures
2.bad ramp lip.

i didnt even go that FAR!!! and its costen me 850$$

yea 400ex tend to have that problem compared to the newer 450's i think.

Just takes a LOT of practice to learn to read the faces, how to hit the jump and how to throw the quad around in the air.

Might wanna try doing a turn down and bringing it back. Usually works for me. Or you can try to turn your handle bars tell they hit the stopper and then you just crank on it as hard as you can the same dirrection and that usually turns the rear end around also.
