well today i finally got my big break and got a used white z400 for 3500. its a 2003. its got lte dual exhaust on it which looks awesome, kandn filter rear douglass red label rims with kenda claws and skid plates.
im moving up from a 250ex so itll be really different... are there any maintience things u z400/kfx owners could tell me about?? will it take a while to get used to?

first of all congrats, 2nd i moved up from a blaster to a Z it was different but i got used to it right away, um its an 03' so wathc out fora bent axle, the chain adjusment sucks, and get a skid

thanks... it came with skidplates so im covered there...how do u adjust the chain? wuts a good lube to use
Posted by: SHOCKER
PJ! cahin lube is pretty good, um the chain adjustment is where the axle attaches to the swinger, its really hard to adjust

thanks for the respose...would u happen to know if its harmful to the quad to shift throught gears 1-5 without pulling in the clutch? ive heard of people doing this and its a lot easier....so does it hurt the quad?

congrats on getting the Z...One thing you want to watch out for is, right above the front shocks mounts the frame will start to crack. I have never heard anything about the axle, mine is a 03 and the only thing about the 03 was the frame..To adjust the chain all you have to do is loosen all 4 bolts on top of the stock swingarm and then loosen the 2 in the back. Now tight the 2 in the back first until you get the right slack. From what I heard is 1/2in to an 1in slack. tight the 4 bolts down. That's what I do..so I might be wrong...but my Z runs like a champ and I haven't had any problems yet.

For your shifting question, the tranny has straight cut gears like all motorcycles...which means you can shift without the clutch, but there is always a chance of stripping or chipping gears if you're doing it under power without the clutch. The worst shift is almost always first to second. Raptors had a weak tranny and that was the failure point....the Z's aren't known to have bad transmissions that I know of....but unless you're racing, it probably doesn't hurt to use the clutch as much as possible to extend the life of your tranny.

Hey, congrats man. I know you will love the z! It sounds like you got an awesome deal on it. I have ridden a 250ex before, the z is a whole nother level. Take it easy on it at first. Get to know it before you go all out.

is the dual exhaust loud? and it wouldnt take up gas right?
Posted by: SHOCKER
it all for show, not to be mean and rude but it is, it doesnt take any more gas but it is just for show, the best exhausts are the HMF and alba, well thats my opinion

for z400guy...yes its loud, actually too loud for my area im mad that i have to take it off and put the stocker back on..
for shocker, yea ur probably right but it does look awesome i just wish it was quieter..........im gunna put the stocker on today

n/m i found these quiet cores in a box of stock parts i got with the quad and its sounds nice now but not annoying

yeah just keep checkin your axle cause it WILL bend. i just did some mild jumping with mine (50-70footers) and it got all wobbly. as for chain lube i would get the chain wax. i cant remember if PJ is the spray on lube? if it is dont get it cause i had it and that stuff is soooo damn sticky. i used it 3 or 4 times and my sprocket was just black from dirt and crud that had stuck to it. it would get on my swinger too and be a pain to get off. anyways congrats and youre gonna love it.
