Looking to buy a new shifter. Which is better and why?
Posted by:
Pro design
Probably cheaper than roll also...

Alba makes a good shifter, too.

I got a used Roll (well it was pretty much brand new) shifter from Pappy and I think it is the schiz. Looks cool and hasn't busted yet after a season of racing.

Roll is sweet!

id go for the pro design it looks cooler and its cheaper too. you could break 2 of em before it cost you how much the roll would cost and i don't think you would break it either cuz they are pretty damn strong

Hey guys,
I just bought a billet shifter on Ebay and you absolutly cannot tell it apart from the Pro Design one other than the ensignia (Pro Design name etched on the shifter) and some additional polishing on the the Pro Des to make it more bling blingish. Here is the link to the one I got---> Generic
And here is a Pro Design--->PD Bling
The Pro Des name on it and polishing are not worth the extra 50% in cost to me. It has to be the same underlining manufacture making the two shifters for these companies. I can't tell them apart...

i bought one from alba for 50.00 and i like it a lot, its bigger and shifts a lot better.

I just checked Alba's site and they want $85 (not including shipping) for the Pro Design. Not sure what shifter you got from them for $50, but's that's the only aftermarket one they list for 400EX.

The Pro Design is $59 and the Roll is $79. Not that big of a difference. What is stiffer, billet aluminum or stainless?
Posted by: Quadzilla
Or the generic PD like I got for $41 (details in my post above).

From what I understand the RollDesign shifter is cast stainless. I like that one better, but I was a bit worried about using a stainless part there. If it really got whacked, being stainless, I'm worried about it tearing up the part it mounts to. For that reason only, I'd probably get an aluminum one. Any thoughts on this?

here is the Alba shifter I have, $37

i got the same one but for my yfz-450, how do you like yours?

Pro design is better.... The roll design is stainless so it will eventually strip the splines on your shift shaft and you will have to replace the shaft (and split your cases) like I am now... Get the Pro design and you wont be disappointed.

How/Why does this happen? Is the stainless too hard for the shift shaft splines? If it is tight it should not move at all.

Yeah, thats just what Ive heard from people at the track... I personally use the Pro Design and like it better. I know a couple local guys who were talking about those roll shifters though, and that problem. I would rather ruin a shift lever than the shaft any day of the week. You arent likely to wear out the pro design anyway, so thats why I suggested it...

its held up great so far

that's my point exactly . . . i'd rather snap a shift lever than strip that spline . . . I'm gonna get the aluminum one.

Get Vise grips...
lol JK I think you better just get what you like better. Everyone has their own style.
